Web Design That Ranks

Where Design Meets Search Performance

There has long been a confrontation between web designers and SEO professionals. Designers focus on visual experience and browser rendering. SEO specialists focus on how crawlers read and weight your content. Both sides are right.

At Stillwater, we bridge that gap. Our SEO web design process builds sites where the architecture, file structure, URL strategy, and on-page content all work together from the start. The result is a site that looks great, loads fast, and earns rankings without needing a costly SEO overhaul after launch.

Management of existing projects is also welcome. Whether you need a redesign with SEO built in or an audit and optimization of your current site, we can help.

Full Service

What's Included

Every SEO web design project from Stillwater covers the technical and strategic foundations that search engines reward.

Custom SEO Architecture

Page structure, file hierarchy, and content divisions designed so crawlers reach your text without wading through hundreds of lines of code.

Page Speed Optimization

External CSS and JavaScript, compressed assets, and minimal payload. Google rewards fast pages. We build them that way from the start.

Fully responsive layouts built for every screen size, with touch-friendly navigation and fast mobile load times.

Clean, Semantic HTML5

W3C-compliant markup that search engines can read easily. Headings, structured data, and keyword-rich file names all aligned with your target phrases.

Keyword-Integrated Content

Target key phrases built into page titles, URLs, headings, and body copy from day one. No retrofitting required.

Analytics and Tracking Setup

Google Analytics, Search Console, and conversion tracking configured at launch so you can measure performance from the first visitor.

Static and Dynamic URL Strategy

Keyword-rich, hyphenated URLs that appear in search results and earn clicks. Canonical tags to prevent duplicate content issues.

CMS with SEO Controls

Every page, post, and product gets its own title, description, and keyword fields. Your team can add content without breaking SEO.

Ongoing Management Available

We can manage and optimize your site after launch. SEO is not a one-time task. Weekly content updates and technical maintenance keep rankings climbing.

How We Work

Our Design Process

A structured four-step process that ensures every site we build is ready to compete in search from day one.

01

Discovery

We research your target keywords, competitive landscape, and business goals. We identify the highest-value key phrases and map them to your site structure before a single line of code is written.

  • Keyword and KEI research
  • Competitor analysis
  • Site architecture planning
  • Target audience mapping
02

Design

We create PSD-based designs that keep all text as real, crawlable text rather than images. Visual hierarchy is built to guide both users and search engine robots to your most important content.

  • PSD mockups with live text
  • Mobile and desktop layouts
  • Navigation and URL structure
  • Content hierarchy planning
03

Development

Clean HTML5 and CSS, externalized scripts, keyword-named files, and a CMS with per-page meta controls. Every page is run through speed tools and validated for W3C compliance.

  • W3C-compliant HTML5/CSS
  • Externalized JS and CSS files
  • Keyword-named files and folders
  • Per-page SEO meta controls
04

Launch and Optimize

We configure analytics, submit to search engines, and monitor crawl reports. After launch, we continue optimizing content and technical elements as your rankings grow.

  • Search Console and Analytics setup
  • Search engine submission
  • Googlebot crawl verification
  • Canonical and duplicate content audit

The Basics

SEO Design Principles We Follow

These are the technical foundations that separate a site built to rank from one that simply looks good. We apply every one of these principles on every project.

Read the Google Starter Guide. It is available as a free PDF from Google's Webmaster resources. Every web designer and developer working with an SEO team should have it.

01

Divide Pages Into Modular Files

Separate header, navigation, sidebars, footer, and content into distinct files. This keeps the code-to-text ratio low so crawlers reach your content quickly. A page can rank with a code-to-text ratio as low as 25% as long as the content section is not buried under hundreds of lines of code.

02

Use Static Pages Whenever Possible

Crawlers love HTML. Static pages are easier to index, faster to load, and carry more SEO weight. Dynamic code can prevent robots from indexing a full page. Use the Google FETCH tool to verify your pages are fully readable by Googlebot.

03

Never Put Text Inside an Image

Pages have jumped dozens of positions in search results just by converting two or three image-based headings into real HTML text. Search engines cannot read text that has been transformed into a GIF, JPG, or PNG. PSDs are preferred because they keep text as crawlable text.

04

Name Files With Keywords

Naming folders and files with target keywords adds the keyword to the URL, improving keyword weight. This applies to images, media files, and page folders. Avoid generic names like blog, articles, or image1. Use hyphens, not underscores, in URLs.

05

Offload JavaScript and CSS

Long JavaScript forces search robots to wade through script before reaching your text. External CSS and JS files give crawlers faster access to your source code and reduce page load time. Never put CSS directly on the web page.

06

Keep URLs Clean and Keyword-Rich

Static URLs with keywords are clicked more often in search results because Google highlights matching keywords in the URL. Avoid symbols like % and apostrophes. Keep directories shallow. Too many nested directories make pages look deep in the site and harder to crawl.

07

Give Every Page Its Own Meta Tags

The most important question for any dynamic site is how each page will have its own keyword, description, and title in the header. Every CMS we build includes a module for per-page meta controls. SEO is a template function, and it must be available on every individual page.
